Indian Grove and Washington Schools
Win Six-Pack Ring Recycling Contest
Indian Grove School in Mount Prospect and Washington School in Glenview have each won a recycled plastic bench in SWANCC's (Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County - Illinois) six-pack ring recycling contest. The park benches are made by the Envirowood Corporation. Indian Grove School recycled 1,745 pounds of six-pack rings and Washington School recycled 988 pounds of material. The schools will receive their benches in May or June, 1998.
The following schools will receive a recycled plastic plaque in recognition of recycling 300 lbs. or more of six-pack rings during the 1997/98 school year: Dryden School, Arlington Heights; Eisenhower School, Prospect Heights; Forest View School, Mount Prospect; John Muir School, Hoffman Estates and Windsor School, Arlington Heights.
Held in cooperation with ITW Hi-Cone, Itasca, SWANCC offers this contest to promote six-pack ring recycling through ITW's Ring Leader Recycling Program. Schools participating in ITW's program are given free kits to collect the materials that include a recycled plastic "tree" on which students hang the six-pack rings they bring from home and that are generated from school functions. SWANCC announced the contest in fall, 1997, and all schools interested in competing were required to register with SWANCC. Throughout the year, schools shipped boxes of materials to ITW Hi-Cone's Fullerton, California recycling plant. In early April, ITW provided weight reports for all registered schools, and the contest winners were determined. A total of 51 schools participated, recycling a total of 7,001 lbs. of six-pack rings! Congratulations to the winners and a special thank you to all 51 schools that participated.
