U.S. Reaches 25 Percent Recycling Goal
A new report, titled "Recycling in America" indicates that in 1995 the nation reached the 25 percent recycling goal set by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1988. The actual rate was 26.1 percent. The report was authored by Dr. J. Winston Porter, president of the Waste Policy Center in Leesburg, Virginia.
From 1985 to 1989, Dr. Porter was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Assistant Administrator for Solid Waste and Emergency Response. In this position, he was the national manager for the EPA's hazardous and solid waste programs. Dr. Porter re-energized the federal solid waste program, including the setting of a national goal of recycling 25 percent of all Municipal Sold Waste (MSW).
